Are M&M’s Keto? The Straight Answer for UK Snackers

16 October 2026 · Keto Snacks & Treats · 1 min read

Colourful candy-coated chocolates

No, M&M’s are not keto. They are chocolate in a sugar shell, and almost all of their carbohydrate is sugar. Even a small bag uses up most or all of a strict keto day’s carbs.

Why M&M’s do not fit

A keto diet usually keeps carbs to about 20 to 50g a day. M&M’s, like most milk chocolate sweets, are roughly two-thirds carbohydrate by weight. Check the nutrition panel on the bag you have: on UK labels the carbohydrate figure already excludes fibre, so what you see is what counts.

The peanut version is a little lower per 100g because of the peanut, but it is still mainly sugar. Crispy, caramel and seasonal versions are no better.

What about one or two?

A handful of sweets will not undo a week, but they rarely stop at a handful, and sugar tends to bring the cravings back. If you are in the first weeks of keto, it is easier to keep them out of the house.

Keto-friendlier swaps for a chocolate craving

  • Very dark chocolate, 85% cocoa or higher, in a small square or two. Check the label, because carbs vary by brand.
  • Sugar-free chocolate sweetened with erythritol or stevia. Avoid maltitol, which raises blood sugar more and can upset your stomach.
  • Nuts with a little dark chocolate: macadamias, pecans or almonds.
  • Full-fat Greek yoghurt with cocoa and a keto sweetener.

The short answer

M&M’s are a sugar sweet and do not fit a keto diet. Reach for very dark or sugar-free chocolate instead, and check the label every time.
